1. Methionine: An essential amino acid to help your body’s second phase of detoxification. It’s also part of the compound glutathione, a powerful antioxidant known to help protect the liver. Good sources include: eggs, tuna, chicken and pumpkin seeds.
2. Water-soluble fibre: It’s important to ensure your body can eliminate the toxins you’re trying to clear so increase foods such as oats, chia seeds & flaxseed to help boost fibre and support bowel movements.
3. Bitters: Known to help stimulate bile production, bitters are great to aid digestion and support the liver. Food sources include: artichokes, rocket & chicory or take as an herbal tincture (Swedish Bitters).
4. Reduce refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol & saturated fats: these common sources of damaging toxins should be reduced to ease the toxic load and allow the liver to heal and repair.
5. Filtered water: Aim for 2L of water daily to help carry nutrients to the liver and flush toxins out of your body. Try adding slices of lemon to help stimulate detoxification processes via the phytochemical limonene.
6. Cruciferous & sulphur rich vegetables: Increase cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli and kale which contain glucosinolates, a compound known to enhance the removal of toxins. Eggs, legumes, onions and garlic are also high in sulphur which helps the body’s defence against bacteria.
7. Milk thistle: its therapeutic effects on the liver, bile duct and spleen make this a great herb to heal and protect the organs of your detoxification system. Enjoy as a tea or tincture.
8. Zinc: required for the formation of alcohol dehydrogenase, an enzyme that aids in the breakdown of alcohol into less toxic substances.
9. Massage and sauna: heat can help open the skins pores and draw toxins from the body whilst massage therapy will help stimulate lymphatic flow.
10. Dandelion root: with its bitter taste this purifying herb can be ground into a great alternative to coffee which will stimulate bile production, aid digestion and be a great all-round tonic for your liver.
